  4.     Ultimately, reality had to catch up with absurdity. Here was
  5. an Israeli government negotiating autonomy for the West Bank and
  6. Gaza Strip at peace talks in Washington, while a critical part
  7. of the coalition advocated either annexing the occupied
  8. territories or expelling the Palestinians en masse. Something
  9. had to go, and last week it was the government's extreme right
  10. wing. By announcing their intention to leave the ruling
  11. coalition this week, the ultranationalists of the Tehiya and
  12. Moledet parties virtually ensured the collapse of Prime Minister
  13. Yitzhak Shamir's government and set the stage for elections as
  14. early as May.

  16.     Their maneuver is likely to stall the peace talks. Shamir
  17. promises to keep talking, but a U.S. official says the
  18. coalition's fall "will raise questions about the government's
  19. ability to negotiate and complicate its strategy formulation."
